LOWER (YEAR7-11) & MIDDLE SCHOOL CURRICULUM

Lower School

(Year 7 to Year 9)

Pupils in the Lower School benefit from a broad and intellectually stimulating curriculum, designed to provide a strong academic foundation while encouraging pupils to excel across a diverse range of disciplines within our Senior School.

All pupils in the Lower School study a wide range of subjects, including Art, Biology, Chemistry, Design Technology, Drama, English, French, Geography, History, Computing, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Physics, Religious Studies and Spanish. This breadth is complemented by a carefully structured shape of the week, ensuring balance between academic study and wider development.

In addition, First Form pupils benefit from dedicated library skills lessons, while pupils in the Second Form and beyond study Spanish as an additional language. A comprehensive PSHE programme supports personal development, alongside provision for EAL (English as an Additional Language), all underpinned by our strong commitment to pastoral care and the wider life in the Senior School.

Middle School (GCSE)

(Year 10 and Year 11)

View our gcse options booklet

The GCSE years in our Middle School see increased academic momentum.

The GCSE years in our Middle School are characterised by increased academic focus and ambition, supported by our well-established Senior Academic programme.

At the end of the Year 9, pupils select three option subjects, typically alongside at least one modern foreign language, to complement the core GCSEs of Mathematics, English and Science. This allows most pupils to pursue up to 10 GCSE qualifications. Teaching is delivered in carefully structured sets, enabling both academic stretch and personalised support, reinforced by excellent pastoral care.

This balance reflects Denstone’s distinctive position: large enough to offer a broad and flexible curriculum, yet small enough to ensure individual attention and strong academic oversight, contributing to our excellent results, careers and further education outcomes.

All pupils complete their GCSE examinations at the end of the Fifth Form. During the Michaelmas Term, they begin exploring their next steps, supported by a structured programme of guidance from tutors and subject specialists. This includes preparation for Sixth Form pathways, as well as opportunities for leadership and service.

Beyond the classroom, academic study is enriched through a wide range of co-curricular activities, alongside opportunities in sport and the arts, ensuring a genuinely holistic educational experience.
